Kinetic energy limit for a moving leafWe measure closing force with a calibrated gauge accurate to 10 N. For a swing door that means at least three seconds from closed to 80 degrees.1m
Minimum detection distanceThe door must see a person at least a metre away, and 1.5 m on an escape route, so it is fully open in time. We test with the standard CA and CB test bodies.8mm
Finger and body gapsGaps must be closed, kept under 8 mm, or opened beyond 25 mm. Anything in between gets a guard, a rubber profile or a sensor.5s
Opening on a power failureSliding doors on escape routes must open within five seconds and stay open, so the entrance does not become the thing that traps people.150N
Manual force on a dead doorWith the power off, a swing door has to be openable by hand with no more than 150 N. If it needs a shoulder, it fails.3s
Closed to 80 degreesThe floor for a low-energy swing door. Anything quicker and the leaf is carrying more energy than a person can safely absorb.

How often should a door be serviced?
Once a year is the minimum the standard's guidance points to. It is a floor, and a busy entrance needs more. This is the schedule we start from before we have seen your door.

Much of our work over the last decade has been for local authorities: fitting powered openers to the homes of people with limited mobility so they can come and go without waiting for someone else. We continue that work for councils, housing associations, occupational therapists and families, from the first assessment to the annual check.

Is automatic door servicing a legal requirement?
The standard itself is not an Act of Parliament, but the duty behind it is law. Once an operator moves a door under power, that door is classed as a machine, and machinery law made by Parliament requires it to be supplied safe and then kept safe and maintained in use. BS EN 16005 is the recognised way of showing you have done that: it says safety functions must be maintained and points to at least one inspection a year by a competent person. It is also the document insurers and courts refer to after an incident.
How often should my doors be serviced?
Once a year is the minimum. A supermarket entrance doing thousands of cycles a day needs quarterly attention, and a health centre or care home usually needs six-monthly visits. We agree the interval from how the door is used rather than from a price list.
Do you work on doors you did not install?
Yes. We service and repair all the major makes, including doors whose original installer has gone or will only touch their own brand.
What do I get after a visit?
A written report listing the tests carried out, the force readings, what passed, what needs attention and when we recommend it is done. Keep it with the door's log book. It is what an inspector or an insurer will ask to see.
Can you take over an existing maintenance contract?
Yes. Send us the current schedule and the last report, and we will quote to continue it or improve it.
